Maafushi – Kaafu Atoll
Maafushi is one of the best-known budget islands in the Maldives, thanks to its proximity to the airport. It lies only 27 km from Male, has a great ferry connection, and offers a wide range of accommodations. Maafushi local island is one of the biggest islands in the Maldives and can be a good choice for first-time visitors.
The southern corner of Maafushi is the tourist zone. Here, you will find a bikini beach, restaurants, and guesthouses. The tourist beach, where you can be in your swimsuit, is pretty small; therefore, we recommend signing up for island hopping tours that will take you to the nearby resort islands to feel real paradise!

A resort trip usually costs 40-140 USD, depending on which island one you want to visit. Moreover, Maafushi tour organizers offer all kinds of tours, from snorkeling to romantic sandbank picnics.
The middle part of the island is where locals live and have facilities, including a mosque, school, and some offices. An interesting fact is that the Maldives’ only prison is in Maafushi, on the island’s northern side.
Male-Maafushi ferry
The ferry to Male leaves from the Villingili terminal. The ticket is about 3 USD, and the journey takes about 1.5 hours. It departs every day at 3 PM except Fridays, and there are two boats on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. The additional one leaves at 10 AM. Dhiffushi – Kaafu Atoll
The small island of Dhiffushi is becoming increasingly popular among tourists, but it is still one of the best budget islands in the Maldives. It is a peaceful place with friendly people where you can experience the real Maldives feeling that goes beyond resort life.
Dhiffushi has two bikini beaches. The one in front of Rashu Hiya Resort is maintained and cleaned regularly by the nearby guesthouses. The second one on the southwest side feels abandoned, and sometimes plastic is washed ashore, but it can be a good place for those seeking privacy.
On the island, there are some shops and 2 cafes that serve local food at affordable prices. Those who wish to visit a Maldives resort island can take a Meeru Island Resort day trip, which costs approximately 50 USD.
How to get to Dhiffushi

Thulusdhoo – Kaafu Atoll
The capital island of Kaafu Atoll is famous for two things that make it one of the most special Maldives budget islands. The first is that Thulusdhoo gives home to a Coca-Cola factory; it is the only place in the world where they use de-salted water for making coke. The second is that it is a great surf spot.

Tourists explored the superb surfing conditions in the 1970s when local tourism started to develop. Several hotels, from 4- and 5-star resorts to budget guesthouses, can be found on Thulusdhoo. There are also some local restaurants.

Surfing, kayaking, and snorkeling are also excellent in Thulusdhoo. The house reef has pretty healthy corals and rich marine life, including sharks and sometimes manta rays!
Thulusdhoo ferry
The local budget ferry from Male to Thulusdhoo departs every day at 3 PM (not on Fridays) near the fish market. The journey costs approx. 6 USD and takes 90 minutes – 2 hours. Speedboat transfer can be used daily. 4 departures can be chosen (11 AM, 4 PM, 5 PM, and 10 PM). The 30-minute trip is 30 USD.
Tip: when visiting the Maldives, prepare yourself for extreme UV radiation! You might know how strong the sun in the tropics is, but the white sand makes it even stronger. It is easy to get a painful sunburn in just 10-15 minutes. Therefore, wear UV protective clothes when on the beach and while snorkeling, and learn how to choose eco-friendly sunscreen with reef-safe ingredients!
Thoddoo – North Ari Atoll
A real paradise island with lush vegetation and picturesque beaches! The popular Thoddoo local island lies 70 km from Male and 20 km from Rasdhoo. It is an idyllic place where you can explore not only the beautiful landscape but also the local life.
Part of the island is an agricultural area, so you can see coconut, papaya, and banana plantations and enjoy freshly picked fruits! A little drawback of this that there are lot of mosquitos around, therefore take an effective mosquito repellent with you!
The bikini beach can be found on the west side of the island. You can get there by foot or bicycle. The water here is good for general beach activities but not for snorkeling. You might find small coral patches and few fish around, but if you want to do decent snorkeling, sign up for a snorkeling tour in one of the dive centers.
Thoddoo ferry service
The Male-Thoddoo ferry operates daily at midnight and there no service on Thursdays and Fridays. The trip is quite long (about 5 hours, a one-way journey is 15 USD) so it may be better to jump on the scheduled speedboat (approx. 35-45 USD), which runs every day except Fridays 2 times per day (11 AM and 4 PM).
Ukulhas – North Ari Atoll
Ukulhas is the perfect local island in the Maldives if you are looking for a family holiday destination! According to tourists and locals, Ukulhas is the most beautiful among Maldives budget islands!
The white sandy bikini beach is exceptionally long compared to other local islands, offering enough room and privacy for visitors. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available. The island itself is very developed: there are shops, cafes, a hospital, and a fitness center.

The various activity options make Ukulhas local island even more attractive! If you get bored snorkeling over the house reef, you can rent a boat and get to the nearby lagoon, where the marine life is even more vibrant.
One can observe colorful corals, various Maldivian fish, octopuses, turtles, and sharks. Moreover, several picnic islands are nearby, where you can organize a romantic day with your loved one.

Whether you want to lie on the beach or seeking for activities, you will get it here! Picnic island excursions, island hopping tours, and dolphin and manta spotting trips are offered daily.
Interestingly, the famous Maldivian dance Bodu Beru originates from this local island. If you are brave enough, you might join the locals who regularly dance in the evenings!

The speedboat leaves Male Marry Brown at 14:30 AM daily (excluding Fridays), costing 50 USD. For the 6 hours of a public ferry trip, you must pay approximately 5 USD/person. The schedule is Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday, leaving at 9 AM from Villingili Terminal.
Dhigurah – South Ari Atoll
Dhigurah is number one on our best Maldives budget islands list for snorkeling with whale sharks. This big, long inhabited island lies not so far from the area where whale sharks congregate to feed due to the presence of plankton-rich currents, therefore you have a high chance to snorkel with these gentle giants if you go out for a spotting tour.
Two dive centers organize whale shark snorkeling and diving trips. We recommend Island Divers, which has knowledgeable and friendly staff.

One can find a small village on the island with grocery and souvenir shops. There is a pretty sandbank on the southern end of Dhigurah. You must walk or bike through the jungle to get there, but the stunning view is worth the effort! Regarding hotels in Dhigurah, you can choose from quite a big selection from lovely B&Bs to decent hotels.

Dhigurah local island is available by ferry from Male, although the trip is long (7 hours). Departures are available on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 8:30 AM. The one-way ticket is 8-10 USD.
The speedboat transfer is more expensive (80-100 USD), but you can get to the island faster, in 2-2.5 hours. The scheduled speedboat also runs on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays and stops at Dhangethi Island.
Alternatively, you can choose the seaplane. Domestic flights operate almost every day between Male and the nearby Maamigili.
Omadhoo – South Ari Atoll
Omadhoo is another proof that not only resort islands offer excellent diving and snorkeling in the Maldives! This inhabited island features one of the healthiest house reefs in the Maldives. There is so much to see here!
Turtles, rays, and baby reef sharks are frequent visitors, as are various tropical fish species. On top of this, there are several manta points not so far from Omadhoo, and if you are lucky, you might swim with a whale shark, too, when heading out for a boat trip.

If you can afford it, don’t miss out on visiting the nearby Conrad Maldives Resort and dining in the famous underwater restaurant!
Even the budget islands of the Maldives vary a lot regarding hotel prices, but Omadhoo belongs to those with reasonable room rates. Don’t expect to find a wide selection of resorts here, just lovely guesthouses and inns.
Male to Omadhoo
The easiest way to get to Omadhoo’s local island is by speedboat. It operates from Monday to Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday at 4 PM. On Fridays, the speedboat departs at 9:30 AM. The price is 25 USD. Rasdhoo is a top local island that is good for exploring the Indian Ocean’s marine life. Just 56 km west of Male, it has a small yet clean bikini beach, various shops, cafes, dive centers, a bank, and a hospital. It is an affordable destination that combines natural beauty and comfort services. Regarding hotels, Rasdhoo has various guesthouses, inns, and lodges that are reasonably priced.

Rasdhoo is one of the best places for a budget holiday in the Maldives if you love snorkeling! The house reef has turtles, rays and small sharks. Moreover, there is a manta point and turtle cleaning station nearby!
Besides the excellent snorkeling opportunities, Rasdhoo has much to offer divers, too! Some of the Maldives’ best dive spots are in the area, with huge schools of fish, sharks, and mantas around. Most of them are also accessible to entry-level divers!

Thinadhoo – Vaavu Atoll
Vaavu Atoll has only five inhabited islands, and Thinadhoo is a top choice for ocean lovers! Thinadhoo dazzles its visitors not only with postcard-perfect beaches but also with teeming marine life. The small village (a couple of shops, two cafes, and one dive center) and the bikini beach area are separated by a tropical jungle, so no one will disturb you while enjoying the sun and sea.

Only a few budget hotels are available on the island. The Plumeria Resort and Hudhu Raakani Lodge are the most popular. They are both famous for exceptional service at affordable prices.
