Biodegradable sunscreen facts and fictions

We are talking a lot about how to eat healthy; we buy bio and organic, but what about our skin? Do you think eating the right things is enough? Do you know that nearly 85% of what you out on your skin goes into your bloodstream? The ingredients in your body care products are important, not only for you, for the planet as well. I know, you love the underwater world, enjoy floating in the sea and observing the marine life. And I also know, you want to keep the reefs healthy. Fact is that our reefs get 6,000 to 14,000 tons of sunscreen annually. Certain ingredients in sunscreens are toxic to corals and marine life and accelerate the process of coral bleaching.

What is a biodegradable sunscreen?

Just because you read „biodegradable sunscreen” it does not mean it is a safe for aquatic ecosystems. Biodegradability means that the product will break down within 28-60 days, but general tests measure the biodegradability in wastewater treatment facilities but Stream2Sea products are tested in salt and fresh water, biodegradable in lakes and rivers, streams as well as in the ocean.

What are the dangerous ingredients?

Unfortunately there are no regulations defining the use of words „green” or „natural”, some products are misleading. They put nice labels on them or pack all green, but the products still contain the dangerous ingredients. The best advice is always read the ingredients panel before buying a product! Here is a little guide what to avoid; buy biodegradable sunscreen which is truly safe and eco-friendly:

Oxybenzone (Benzophenone-3)A very common ingredient in FDA approved sunscreens. Very effective at reducing UV exposure, it is hazardous irritant for eye contact and slightly hazardous for direct skin contact. Oxybenzone penetrates the skin, according to the Center for Disease Control 97 percent of Americans have this chemical circulating in our bodies. Also listed as a direct cause of coral bleaching by Robert Davanero.
ParabensParabens are commonly used to prevent the growth of bacteria, yeast and molds in body care products and sunscreens. These ingredients can mimic the hormone estrogen (this hormeone contributes to breast cancer) Many brands have already recognized the problem and offer paraben-free products, always check the label!
Cylcopentasiloxane / CyclomethiconeSilicone-based ingredients which soften the skin and smooth hair, but are toxic and to bio-accumulate in aquatic organisms.
FormaldehydeYou won’t see formaldehyde listed on any of your personal care products, but many of the preservatives that have been used as paraben replacements RELEASE formaldehyde like Diazolidinyl urea, Quaternium-15, DMDM Hydantoin and Hydroxymethylglycinate. Formaldehyde is a human carcinogen.
SLS and SLES (Sodium laureth sulfate and Sodium lauryl)SLS and SLES are not new in the news; they are surfactant, detergent, emulsifier that creates lots of lather in shampoos and body washes. Although SLS is ‘derived from coconuts,’ it is not natural. It is toxic to your body and also to aquatic organism.
MethylisothiazolinoneA widely used and very effective preservative which is considered a sensitizer and irritant and causes allergic reactions.
HomosalateHomosalate used as a UV absorber that helps sunscreen ingredients penetrate your skin. It bio-accumulates in the body faster than it can be eliminated and is considered a hormone disrupter.
Nano particlesNanomaterials (with a size of 1 to 100 nanometers) can react in the body and environment differently from the same material that is non-nano. Although manufacturers have stated that nanoparticles are safe, there are still concerns among scientists. A recent study has shown that zinc oxide nanoparticles, even in extremely low concentrations, caused disoders in sea life.
MicrobeadsCommonly used in cleansers and exfoliants, but also found in toothpastes. Because they are so fine, most wastewater treatment plants cannot filter these and they end up in the environment, in fish and in other aquatic species.
Octocrylene A synthetic UV absorber and SPF booster. It may cause allergic reactions on sensitive skin.
Oxtinoxate / Octyl methoxycinnamate Also a commonly used UV filter which is absorbed through the skin and has been found in human urine, blood and breast milk, showing that it is systematically absorbed. It is an endocrine disruptor that can mimic hormones. Listed as a direct cause for coral bleaching by Robert Davanero.
Quaternium-15 A very effective, broad antimicrobial ingredient preservative – Used in low concentrations, it is still classified as a skin, eye, and respiratory irritant. According to SafeCosmetics.org quaternium-15 considers to be among the most clinically significant contact allergens in children.
Phthalates Commonly found in synthetic fragrances, block male hormones; high levels can cause sluggish sperm and low testosterone levels in adult males. These are also classified as endocrine disruptors that can interfere with normal brain function.
Retinyl Palmitate Retinyl Palmitate is composed of palmitic acid and retinol (Vitamin A). When exposed to UV light (or sunshine), retinol compounds break down and produce toxic free radicals that can damage the skin.
Zinc Oxide Zinc is found naturally in the environment and in seawater. Many zinc based sunscreens are promoted to be clear, but some of the dispersions are highly toxic to aquatic organisms, so a sunscreen with zincoxide is absolutely not a biodegradable sunscreen.

The most important is: Know your ingredients! Don’t trust in nice marketing slogans, if a product says that it is “natural,” “organic” or “ocean safe,” does not mean that it is. Turn the bottle over or search a full ingredients list in the web shops and check out all the ingredients. It is a hard work at the beginning and takes time, but worth the efforts. Believe me, you will feel yourself much better if you do your shopping in the aware of information and buy products which are good for you, for your family and for the nature as well. You can check not only the biodegradable sunscreen and body care selection, there are wide selection of eco-friendly products for your whole household.
