Although GoPro is the most known brand among the action cameras, there are great (and sometimes more affordable) other products on the market as well. GoPro alternatives under 150 USD

Geekpro 4.0

The GeekPro is a 12 MP action cam with LCD screen, is able to record 1080P full HD videos. It comes with waterproof housing, 4G wrist remote control and tons of mounting accessories (the large amount of provided mounts is a huge advantage compared to other brands so it could be a good choice among the GoPro alternatives). The video quality is great considering the size, but it films in fish eye effect which makes the footage rounded and it also focuses better on things that are further away than the ones that are close.

Kitvision Edge HD10

The Kitvision HD 10 provides you with full HD 1080p video recording and can be used as an 8 MP camera. This super lightweight camera has an amazing battery capacity, it gives you up to 2,5 hours recording time. Many GoPro alternatives are not able to zoom, but the Kitvision Edge HD 10 has 4x digital zoom. It has 170 degree ultra wide angle lens and records in 30 FPS. The selling price is under 100 USD, so it is a good deal! The camera is compatible with the GoPro mounts. It films in 1080p/30fps, max photo resolution is 12 MP. It has a 1700 wide-angle lens, LCD display and 4x digital zoom, mini USB and HDMI port. The 900 mAh battery provides 80 minutes filming time. The videos are clear and sharp, although the motion detect is not sensitive enough and night performance could be better.

Xiaomi YI

Amazing value for money – that’s a common review on Xiaomi, many users say probably this is one of the best among the cheap GoPro alternatives. This real gem sold at a low price, under 70 USD. The camera records 2k 30fps or 1080p 60fps, takes pictures at 16 MP, quality is similar to GoPro 3+. Although the Xiaomi YI has no built-in screen, an optional one can be connected easily. Video quality is excellent, the colours are natural, sharpness is high. Images are sharp even in low light. The view of field is 155 degrees fisheye, The battery lasts about 75 minutes at 1080p60fps.

Lightdow LD6000

If you are looking for an action camera in lower price range, the Lightdow LD6000 could be a good alternative. It records in full HD at 30fps and has built-in screen and WIFI, you just need to download an app and you’ll be able to control the camera remotely. The video quality is similar to GoPro Hero 3 Silver. The battery is 900 mAh which allows you approx 60-80 minutes recording time. In the package you’ll find different mounts and accessories but it fits with GoPro accessories as well. It features 4x digital zoom, dash-cam mode, anti-shake and motion detect. Audio recording is not great in the protective case and unfortunately there is no ability to use an external mic.

GoPro alternatives over 300 USD

TomTom Bandit

The TomTom broke the rules and came out with a bullet shape action camera. The design is tidy, there is a large, easy to read screen on it. The Bandit is a good action camera, a serious rival of GoPro. This camera features built-in motion, heart rate sensor and GPS. It records 4K videos at 15 fps and captures slow motion and photos up to 16 MP. The base protective lens cover is just splash proof, to make it waterproof you need to buy an extra dive lens. It is extremely easy to mount, the Bandit’s mount rotation is designed to enable you rotating you camera as you wish.

Sony FDR-X1000

Sony also wanted to take its part from the action camera market and offer GoPro alternatives. The FDR-X1000 matches rugged but flexible adventure filming technology; it was designed for dusty and splashing conditions. The video and photo quality is excellent (4K ultra HD videos, there are built-in exposure compensation and image stabilization). The original housing is waterproof up to 33 feet ~10 m (you may buy an extra dive housing if you wish which is waterproof up to 200 feet ~60 m). Compared to other action cameras the FDR-X1000 feels a bit bulky, and sometimes water droplets stick on the lens cover.

Garmin VIRB-XE

The Garmin took capturing the action to another level: you can not only film your best moments but also add location, speed and GPS datas, it is a perfect camera for outdoor enthusiasts. The GPS enables you to locate the camera if you lose it. Video quality is great, camera is easy to use. The PRO mode allows you to adjust white balance, ISO, exposure, colour profile and sharpness easily. The digital image stabilization and zoom work well. It is waterproof up to 164 feet ~50 m without any additional case. Disadvantage is: it is easy to lose the proprietary cables and software needs to be improved according to the users.
